Once it happens again, I will post an update. Sometimes guests won't start at all, especially if I don't let OSX 'settle' after starting up - can't remember the exact error message but something along the lines of cannot access /dev/mmon or something like that. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing VMWare Tools, plus various display setting options, enabling/disabling separate Spaces in OSX, but Unity just isn't working. The apps appear fine in single window mode, but as soon as I switch to Unity they are displayed as featureless white windows. My Windows 8.1 guest goes into Unity mode, but every window/app I open I just get a white box of the appropriate size.
